The series follows the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at the Jersey Shore. Season 2 followed the cast escaping the cold northeast winter to Miami Beach, with Season 3 returning to the Jersey Shore. MTV has announced that a fourth season, filmed in Italy, will premiere on August 4, 2011. MTV confirmed in June 2011 that Season 5 will return to Seaside Heights.
The show debuted amid large amounts of controversy regarding the use of the words "Guido/Guidette," portrayals of Italian-American stereotypes, and scrutiny from locals because the cast members were not residents of the area.
Dubbed a cultural phenomenon, the series has garnered record ratings for MTV, making it the network's most viewed series telecast ever. The series' cast has also been credited with introducing unique lexicon and phrases into American popular culture, and the University of Chicago has announced an academic conference that will examine the show. In 2010, the cast of Jersey Shore was named on Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People list. The series has since exported to dozens of countries worldwide.
Summer at the Jersey Shore kicks off when eight soon-to-be roommates move into their summer share. Romance heats up between Sammi and Mike "The Situation", but all might be lost when the guys invite three random girls to join them in the hot tub. Meanwhile, Snooki comes on way too strong, by getting drunk and flirting, and finds herself the outcast. She can only hope that first impressions won't be lasting impressions.
Still feeling like the outcast, Snooki tells the others that she's leaving the Shore. Then the roommates' first night out at the club gets flirty, proving that the boyfriends back home might, in fact, have something to worry about. And what started with Mike "The Situation" and Sammi turns into a love triangle that threatens to divide the house.
Mike "The Situation" has trouble accepting the fact that Sammi chose Ronnie over him. Angelina decides she's too good to work at the Shore Store and Danny fires her, which means she's no longer allowed at the house and has to leave the show forever. And JWoww's boyfriend comes for a visit but she waits before telling him about kissing Pauly D.
After a night at the clubs, and "beating the beat", Pauly D. and Mike "The Situation" have to juggle multiple groups of girls. Pauly D. takes a grenade for Mike "The Situation". Snooki's mother comes in for a visit, and an emotional Snooki shows her "true colors". And later that night mayhem breaks out when a fight erupts at a bar, and one of the housemates goes down.
With the support from most of her housemates, Snooki recovers from the punch. Ronnie's family comes for a visit and Sammi does her best to make a good first impression. JWoww gets tired of all the haters at the club and gets in a fight. Mike "The Situation", Pauly D. and Vinny continue their schemes to hook up with as many girls as possible, but Vinny may have crossed a line when he takes the boss's girl home.
When Mike "The Situation" invites girls back to the house, the situation gets out of control, and Snooki gets into her second fight of the summer. Meanwhile Ronnie gets into a brawl of his own, leaving Sammi questioning their relationship.
The roommates head to Atlantic City. Fun turns to fury when Mike "The Situation" manages to antagonize both Snooki and JWoww. Snooki reveals that she used to be bulimic.
JWoww apologizes to Mike "The Situation" after the fight and Pauly D.'s got a stalker. A night out at the club turns into a dirty brawl and Ronnie is arrested.
Ronnie is released from his night in the slammer and the guys comfort Snooki after she has a bad encounter with her ex-boyfriend. The housemates wrap things up at the Jersey Shore as summer draws to a close, but not before one final house hot tub hook-up.
America’s favorite Guidos and Guidettes reunited for an entertaining hour of looking back and looking forward on MTV’s Jersey Shore Reunion Special January 21. Up until I watched the reunion I had my doubts that this group could capture lightning in a bottle again in their second season, but despite all of their successes they still seemed to have the capacity to be authentically aggressive and dramatic! Now I’m a little excited about round two next summer
