Plot: Based in Quantico, Virginia, the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is a subsection of the FBI. Called in by local police departments to assist in solving crimes of a serial and/or extremely violent nature where the perpetrator is unknown (referred to by the Unit as the unknown subject or unsub for short), the BAU use the controversial scientific art of profiling to track and apprehend the unsub. Profiling entails coming up with basic characteristics of the unsub and the victims (referred to as the victimology), using evidence from the case and matching that information to historic precedents and psychological analyses as a means to solve the case. Because of the nature of the work conducted by the BAU - the work being time consuming and psychologically demanding - its members are fiercely loyal to the Unit and to its other members. Also because of the work's overall demanding nature, not many members of the BAU have been able to maintain a happy or stable family life.

The week before Carla had contacted Agent Goldman to report a scam and her story matched the con artist Goldman had been tracking. Goldman informs the team that his con artist’s playground is investment fraud and he’s scammed hundreds of thousands of dollars from his wealthy victim-investors. He uses his looks and charms to target single wealthy women or the wives of wealthy men. But he’s never been violent before. Con men profile as psychopaths and the team believes that this man killed because he lost control of the situation and if he continues to spiral, everyone around him will be in danger. He will kill again and whatever is making him kill is not financial by psychological.

They discover that the UnSub set up nine identical investment websites but with different names. Juggling all of these different aliases is fracturing the UnSub mentally, causing him to lose control. But he slips up and tells his client to make out the investment check to Henry Moffet. When the client becomes suspicious, he kills him. From the information obtained at the latest crime scene, the team believes that the UnSub is on a mission to eliminate all of his aliases by assassinating all of his victim-investors. The UnSub’s travel patterns reveal that at one point, he stayed in San Diego three and half years and after that never stayed in a city that long again. The team believes that the reason for Unsub’s extended stay in San Diego was that he married and started a family. Knowing that con men put everything in their wife’s name, Garcia tracks women who’ve rented homes and cars within the last 8-12 months in the Fort Lauderdale area and had a history in San Diego. She comes up with one name, Rebecca Hodges, mother to J.D. Hodges and wife to William Hodges, our UnSub.

Trying to get away, the team finds the UnSub dragging his son out of a home to their car. A standoff ensues. The UnSub releases his son to the BAU. One of those heads was a recent death, while the other two were killed some time ago, although the decapitations themselves conducted recently. The BAU's initial thoughts are that it has to do with the border drug trade, or that because the more decomposed heads displayed now, the drug trade issue is a red herring for illegal immigration from Mexico. Indeed the three deaths are of John or Jane Doe's, fueling the BAU's speculation that they are illegal immigrants from Mexico. Believing the murders drug related, the deputy sheriffs in Terlingua arrest Omar Morales, head of one of the local drug cartels. Recently arrived Sheriff Ruiz on the other hand is certain Morales is not guilty of these murders, and that the deaths have to do with her knowledge of known illegal immigrants missing, the heads a sign for her to stop what has only been her limited investigation thus far. The Unsub puts the viral videos of the intrusion and killings live online for anyone to stream. He’s good with computers and proves challenging for Garcia to trace the video’s origin. Through the victims’ pictures, Reid discovers a facial pattern throughout them and believes the Unsub’s facial structure is the same. After they deliver the profile, a key detail they withhold from the press conference is leaked and the Unsub accelerates his process, expressing rage in his next live video stream. Garcia is unable trace the video, but traces the chat room while the team watches him take his next victim. In the Unsub’s haste, he leaves fiber optic cable which reveals he’s working for an internet installation company, his way into his victim’s home. Looking over his client list, they find the woman with the same facial structure, but she’s gone. Season: 5 Episode 23 - Our Darkest Hour Aired: 2010-05-26
The team is called to LA to investigate a series of home invasions turned homicides and they posit that the killings are all being done by the same Unsub. At the same time, because of the heat wave going on, there’s a series of rolling blackouts going through the city. The team discovers that the Unsub is taking advantage of the city’s rolling blackouts to pursue his victims; he has his pick because everyone is vulnerable. The team realizes that in order to stop the Unsub from killing when the lights go out they need to stop the rolling blackouts. The risk they take in doing this is the potential for an ENTIRE city blackout which is what ultimately will happens by Act Four.

The team figures out that the Unsub chooses to kill in dark for a reason. They look at previous home invasions where the power was cut and Garcia finds that this MO was popular 25 years ago where there was a series of home invasions/homicides in San Diego, Orange County and LA. No one put it together before because they never realized that the power being cut was actually the characteristic that linked all of them together. What the team also discovers is that this Unsub has been active since then but he’s being working his way throughout California killing people at random.

So why is he back in Los Angeles now? There’s something personal for him to come back to LA. The lead detective on the case, Matt Spicer, is a hot shot, young mid-30s cop. He’s basically touted as the hero of the city, consistently praised for being such a great detective at such a young age. He happens to be a survivor of one of the previous home invasions, 25 years ago, where the Unsub killed his single mother and left him as the sole survivor. This was the reason he became a cop – for vengeance and to catch serial killers like the one that killed his mother. The Unsub is now back because he loves taunting his victims, screwing with them. He’s seen Spicer on the television. He is the head of the homicide unit and the Unsub knows that the only reason he’s there is because of what the Unsub did to him. He returns to LA just to screw with him. And the ultimate reward for the Unsub is that this detective now has a daughter of his own, Ellie.

By the end of the episode, the detective is back at his old house, the original scene of the crime, with his daughter, Ellie, his sister Kristin and Morgan. The Unsub is there as well and forces Spicer to beg for his life or else he’ll kill his daughter. Morgan is restrained and unable to do anything to help. Spicer begs for his life and the Unsub shoots him in the head and takes off with Ellie. And this is where we leave the season only to pick up next year with our team chasing the Unsub and the girl.
