It’s a morning for mourning as Izzie deals with the loss of Denny by lying motionless on the floor in a prom dress. Meredith is nominated to help her through the grieving process because she’s “dark and twisty” inside. George is actually the first to reach out, or in this case, lie down with Izzie. Nothing changes. Cristina also strikes out when she hits the floor with Iz. It’s gonna take some time.
Meredith confesses to Cristina that she slept with Derek at work and lost her panties. No worries. Addison finds them and decides to pin them to the bulletin board at work. Seattle Grace really should invest in a lost & found box. Addison is obviously a little ticked at Mer-Der. Infidelity will do that to a person.
Addison drinks, Izzie bakes, Cristina strips, Alex assaults and Meredith plays the field. Oh, and a teenage boy comes into Seattle Grace wearing a tree. That’s right, a tree!
Cristina surprises Burke in his hospital bed by stripping down to her lacy red underwear. It’s quite the sexy little scene until Burke’s mom and dad pop in for a visit. Hey, Preston, don’t you just hate it when your folks catch you with a girl in your room? Things go from bad to worse when Mrs. Burke hears Cristina refer to Bailey as \"The Nazi.\" Now, Mrs. B. believes her son is dating a “racist stripper.” We don’t remember that particular job listing from career day.
We think Diahann Carroll is awesome as the steely-eyed, super-critical mom who basically tells Cristina she’s not good enough for her son. The guy who plays Mr. Burke is pretty cool, too. He only says one thing the entire episode as he tells a self-conscious Cristina to, “Hang in there.” By the look on her face, we know she will.
Izzie and Burke both attempt a return to Seattle Grace but only one actually steps inside. And while some doctors dream about surgeries, others dream about threesomes. Care to guess who we’re talking about?
Meredith’s fantasies of a threesome with Derek and Finn are so much better than the reality of dating both men. When Finn shows up to have lunch with her at work, Derek lures her away with the promise of a surgery. When Derek brings Meredith home from dinner, Finn shows up with dessert. Ice cream. Strawberry. Meredith chews them out for not giving her a real, romantic date. She slams the door on both of them. But she does take the ice cream. Yeah, we love strawberry, too.
Meredith finally decides between Derek and Finn, Izzie has an illuminating discussion with Denny’s dad and there’s a hot new doc at Seattle Grace.
Addison and Derek are stunned when the Chief hires Dr. Mark Sloan as the new head of plastic surgery. Sloan is quickly dubbed McSteamy. His first case involves a car salesman who lights up a cigarette while wearing an oxygen mask. BOOM goes the salesman who is left with severe facial burns.
Addison’s patient is due to deliver her baby any minute but refuses to consider a C-Section. Alex wants to bail on the case, as he’s eager to scrub in with Sloan. Addison is fed up with Alex, so she says GO. Alex’s enthusiasm diminishes as Mark gives him his first assignment—a bone dry cappuccino. Sloan does his best to save the salesman’s face but his bedside manner needs a little work. Bailey steps in to comfort the patient and his wife.
Bailey is attacked by her peers, Derek discovers a troubling secret about Addison and a man and his ex-wife literally “get stuck” making love.
Dr. Bailey comes under fire during an open forum discussion about Denny’s death. Bailey is criticized for not being able to control her interns. Meredith, George, Alex and Cristina all look like they want to crawl under a rock as they listen in the audience. Bailey’s role as a new mom is also attacked. She endures several spiteful remarks from an arrogant doctor named Savoy. We’ll call him McSnidely. Dr. Savoy claims sleep deprivation and fluctuating hormones may have led to Dr. Bailey’s poor decision-making that day. Told ya. McSnidely!
Izzie returns to work, Cristina is still covering for Burke and Meredith catches a beautiful mystery woman sprawled out on McDreamy’s bed.
Meredith is upset because Derek hasn’t called even after she told him she broke up with Finn. She goes to his trailer to find him fresh out of the shower, as a beautiful woman sits on his bed. She should have called first.
Cristina takes over writing the surgery schedule to protect Burke. She’s so busy that she doesn’t have time to listen to Meredith’s complaints about Derek. So, George says he’ll be Cristina for Meredith if Meredith channels her inner-Izzie for him. It’s a pretty hilarious exchange, especially when George sums up the Derek situation by saying, “So McDreamy was doing the McNasty with a McHottie? The McBastard!” What a McRiot!
The men of Seattle Grace take to the great outdoors for a camping trip while McSteamy stays behind to work and flirt with Meredith.
Derek’s dreams of a relaxing camping trip are obliterated when Burke invites the Chief, George, Alex, Joe (of Joe’s Bar) and Walter along. The Chief has an eye-opening moment when he realizes Joe and Walter are a couple. George also learns a few new things. While fishing, he notices Burke’s shaky hand. Then Alex tells him that Callie is sleeping with Sloan. As we all know, them’s fightin’ words!
Everyone rallies around George when his dad is admitted to Seattle Grace with a growing list of health issues. And Meredith transforms from “dark and twisty” to “bright and shiny.” We’ll see if it sticks.
Meredith and Derek are both surprisingly chipper. As their relationship begins anew, they agree to take it slow. And by slow, we mean taking bubble baths together. Well, there’s “regular slow” and there’s “sudsy slow.” A de-bubbled Dr. Grey declares to her friends that “dark and twisty” Meredith has left the building and “bright and shiny” Meredith is here to stay. If it’s true, we think this could be a sign of the apocalypse.
Cristina’s secret is going to come out one way or another after the ER is overrun with traumas and George calls for someone other than Dr. Burke to operate on his dad.
Okay, we were a bit freaked out by the opening montage. Cristina does the voiceover as scenes of her and Burke making love are intercut with shots of Cristina running down the hall, her surgical gown covered in blood.
Things get even more intense once a dozen trauma victims flood the ER after an elderly driver plowed into the crowd at the fish market. A woman drenched in blood collapses in Addison’s arms. She’s ten weeks pregnant and has a large shard of glass lodged in her heart. She needs surgery. Stat!
Conjoined brothers, secret sisters and a devoted son whose dad is fighting for his life highlight a frantic family day at Seattle Grace.
Conjoined adult twins want to be separated. One twin has fallen for a woman. He wants some alone time with his true love. Unfortunately, the woman has fallen for the other twin. This may be the strangest love triangle Seattle Grace has ever seen! Well, today, at least.
Burke and Cristina are ready to suffer the repercussions of their cover-up of Burke’s tremor. Bailey is beyond peeved when she finds out there will be no repercussions. Legally, there was no malpractice because they didn’t kill anyone. Always a good thing when you’re a surgeon.
The thing about Part One episodes of Grey’s Anatomy is that, once they end, we just can’t wait for Part Two! What we’re trying to say is…here we go again!
Meredith snores. It’s a cute snore. But a snore’s a snore. When she catches Derek sacked out in George’s room, the truth comes out. Since they’ve been together, he’s always slept on the couch. He sets an alarm and crawls back to bed before Meredith wakes. Not the most McSensitive thing to do to someone with abandonment issues.
Everything comes to a head today at Seattle Grace when George’s dad takes a turn for the worse and he has to make the most difficult decision of his life.
Alex and Addison act all floopy toward each other after their near-miss kiss. Addison has a lot on her mind. She tells Callie that she had an abortion after getting pregnant with Mark’s baby. The due date would have been right about now. That’s why Mark’s been so out of sorts lately. Addison tells him he would have been a terrible father. We felt that was a tad harsh. But after talking with Callie, Mark agrees. So, what do we know?
News that the Chief is stepping down has more than a few of Seattle Grace’s finest surgeons updating their resume. George becomes a sex machine and, for Callie’s sake, he must be stopped!
Callie is worn out from having non-stop sex with George. She begs Izzie to take over. (Oh, get your mind out of the gutter! She means take over watching out for him.) This perpetual sex thing is just a coping mechanism as he deals with his father’s death. Hey, there are worse ways to cope.
Meredith’s mom is suddenly lucid after five years of Alzheimer’s. And a couple of Seattle Grace’s top docs tie the knot in Vegas. Care to guess who got hitched?
Ellis Grey’s Alzheimer’s condition is in temporary abeyance. When Meredith breaks the news to her now-lucid mom about her illness, Ellis collapses. She’s admitted to Seattle Grace with heart arrhythmia. As Ellis recovers in her hospital room, Meredith tells her mom that she’s happy. This is the wrong thing to say to Mama Grey. Ellis didn’t raise her daughter to be “happy.” Ellis sees Meredith as “ordinary” and “unfocused.” Her speech is filled with so much venom. The look on Meredith’s face has us almost as devastated as she is.
Ellis demands a neuro consult. Paging Dr. Shepherd! Once Ellis realizes Derek and Meredith are together, the fangs come out again. She accuses Derek of taking advantage of her daughter. Cristina tells Ellis she needs surgery for her heart condition. Ellis refuses. But it’s ultimately Meredith’s call. Mer tells her mom she hates being the one in charge but she has no choice. Ellis alienated everyone else in her life.
A Seattle Grace team leaves the hospital to answer a triage call. When they arrive on the scene, no one can believe the massive devastation that continues to unravel before their eyes.
Derek finds Meredith underwater in the tub and quickly pulls her out. We don’t think Meredith is trying to kill herself, but Derek knows she’s hurting from all the vicious things her mom said.
Derek confides his frustration with Meredith’s depression to Burke. Burke then goes against Cristina’s wishes by telling Derek he’s engaged. The news spreads and when the Chief (sporting a freshly-died dark hairdo) congratulates Cristina, she knows Meredith is gonna be ticked because she wasn’t the first to hear the big news.
Every doctor at Seattle Grace works feverously to aid the trauma victims of the ferry boat disaster. Every doctor except one. Meredith Grey is missing!
Picking up where the last episode left off, Derek sees Meredith’s jacket covering a trauma victim at the dock. He then sees the little girl who was with her. When Derek asks her about Meredith, she points to the icy water. He (and we) fears the worst.
Izzie’s patient is still trapped under a car. The man’s friends are all over her to help. Give Iz a break, fellas! She’s only been allowed to observe operations lately. Izzie calls the Chief on a cell phone. Richard and Mark talk her through a procedure where she must use a power drill to penetrate the man’s skull. She’s able to relieve the cranial pressure. The man survives and when they get back to Seattle Grace, the Chief officially lifts Izzie’s probation.
Meredith Grey is fighting for her life! Her friends are doing everything they can to save her. But is she doing everything she can to save herself?
The Chief, Bailey and Burke work feverishly to revive Meredith, but they can’t get a heartbeat. Addison tells her friends to prepare themselves for the worst. It’s nothing anyone wants to hear (including us). Cristina takes it especially hard, leaving the hospital to go shopping at the 99-cents store. She then hits Joe’s Bar, where she flaunts her new discount purchases while drinking. Burke shows up and says she should come back to the hospital to say goodbye to her friend. We’re not sure Cristina has the strength.
The retiring Chief’s job is up for grabs and it may just go to the new guy who’s grabbing Cristina’s butt. Two people we totally don’t expect to end up in bed together, well…you guessed it…end up in bed together.
Izzie examines a war vet who complains about pain in his shoulder. It appears he was shot by his own men after he made a call they didn\'t like. Did we mention it happened 50 years ago? The man agrees to surgery so he can finally prove who shot him. But the bullet is too badly damaged to prove anything. It’s a nice souvenir though.
George meets Callie’s dad a day after committing adultery with Izzie. Hey, is there ever really a good time to meet the parents?
Izzie is completely reeling after having slept with George, but George doesn\'t remember a thing. Bummer. He does have a killer hangover though. His headache is compounded when he finds out Callie’s dad is in town. Daddy’s not too thrilled about the quickie marriage, but he’s willing to provide for the newlyweds. Then last night comes back to George in a flash and he excuses himself, but not before insisting he doesn\'t want any of the Torres family fortune.
Callie’s dad respects George for wanting to be a sole provider, but he warns him to never hurt his only little girl. Too late! George finds Izzie and she realizes he now knows that they slept together. Izzie wants to tell Callie but George insists he can\'t hurt her. Think they’ll be able to keep the secret?
As Izzie deals with the aftershocks of her night of passion with George, her world is rocked once again when the daughter she gave away 11 years ago comes into Seattle Grace.
George promises an exhausted Callie, who\'s worked all night, that he\'ll meet her later for coffee. In walks Izzie, carrying a rosary. Alex is surprised she\'s doing penance and says, \"You did something bad.\" She and George exchange guilty looks. Things get more intense for Izzie when a couple, the Kleins, come in because their adopted daughter has leukemia. The young girl, Hannah, is actually the baby Izzie gave up for adoption 11 years ago. Can you say “curveball?!”
The interns cram for their boards as Burke tries to get a disinterested Cristina to sample cakes for the wedding. As far as the medical cases are concerned, we have two words for you: Penis Fish.
The chairman of the hospital board, Larry Jennings, is admitted. His testicles have become horribly swollen after returning from an exotic trip with his assistant/mistress, Celeste. X-rays reveal that a rare fish swam up his penis while he peed in the Amazon River. It’s a lesson for all you kids out there…always go potty before leaving the house! Now the fish is lodged in Jennings’ bladder and they must operate immediately.
Ever wonder how Seattle Grace’s own Addison Montgomery got her start in a Private Practice? Well, that’s why the world has crossover episodes!
Addison takes a leave of absence from Seattle Grace to visit her old friends Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs) at the Oceanside Wellness Group in sunny Santa Monica, California. Naomi tells Addy that she and Sam, now a bestselling medical guru, got divorced but they still work together. Sound familiar? Addison tells Naomi, a fertility specialist, that she wants to have a baby. She\'s finally realized the men in her life aren\'t going to come through for her in that department.
Meredith’s friends fear she may not be ready as they all attempt to pass the most important test of their lives. And Burke wonders if Cristina is truly ready to marry him.
Thatcher Grey bans Meredith from Susan’s funeral. The Chief assures Meredith she\'s not to blame for Susan’s death and that Thatcher knows it too. Meredith tells Richard that just because he slept with her mom it doesn’t make him her father. Easy, Mer. The Chief was just trying to help.
Three of four lost mountain climbers come in with severe frostbite and various broken bones. They say they were all tied together when a sudden storm hit and fell, as a group, down a 100-foot drop. When they came to, their friend Lonnie was dead. They had no choice but to leave him. We sense there’s more to the story.

The last episode left us hanging. Now, brace yourself for more of the same as the season finale sends some of our favorite Seattle Grace surgeons spinning in a new direction, while others simply spin out of control.
The Chief must fill two top jobs at Seattle Grace while caring for a pregnant Adele, who needs surgery. Addison does her best, but Adele loses the baby. Richard, thinking Adele is the one who has died, rushes to her side. He’s beyond relieved when he sees she’s okay and beyond surprised when she reveals he was the baby’s father. We’re relieved and surprised to see these two may now be on the road to reconciliation. We’re also glad to see that Joe and Walter’s surrogate mom looks to be fine, as do the healthy twin babies.
