New interns, a new boss and a new family member take a backseat to the intense new traumas and dramas that hit Seattle Grace’s newest surgical residents. But it’s the same old, same old for our old friend George who must repeat his internship while dealing with some unresolved Izzie issues. Let’s just call them Izzues.
It’s been a few weeks since Cristina was left at the altar. We know…it was harsh. But she managed to make the most of her honeymoon by snorkeling with Meredith in Hawaii. Back on dry land, Bailey spent her time stewing over the fact that Callie was named Chief Resident. Derek was asked to deliver a message from Burke, Alex resisted the urge to visit Rebecca while Izzie pretty much spent her days waiting around for George.
An apartment explosion, a missing meth baby, an obsessed sibling, a little S&M (it’s not what you think) and one slightly scary mama make for a highly-addictive day at Seattle Grace.
Remember when Mer-Der broke up about eight seconds before they decided to sleep together? It’s all good because now they simply label their liaisons S&M, or “sex and mockery.” It’s the best breakup ever!
But breaking up is hard to do. Just ask George and Cristina. George, who finally declared his love for Izzie, now has to spill that tidbit to his wife. Cristina tries to cope by trading wedding gifts for favors from her coworkers. Makes sense. Wouldn’t you give up an espresso maker for a chance to scrub in with McSteamy?
Secrets, lies and a really old guy jump-start the day at Seattle Grace. Toss in a very chatty woman who may lose her tongue, two top docs in over their heads and more than a few shocking revelations and you’ll find that even the best doctors have no cure when the truth stings.
Meredith and Derek are enjoying their secret affair. But the secret’s out when Cristina catches them acting all gooey in the elevator. Cristina thinks Meredith didn’t tell her about “doin’ McDreamy” because she’s still reeling from the Burke breakup. She’s not. Still, Cristina acts depressed so Meredith will show pity and slide her some surgeries. It’s either inspired or horrifying. We can’t decide.
An emotionally-charged case hits close to home for The Chief while everyone else in the hospital anticipates a no holds barred brawl between Izzie and Callie. Oh, and there’s an offer of “48 hours of sex” on the table for someone at Seattle Grace.
When we last left our constantly-conflicted pal George, he had just told Callie about his affair with Izzie. In a move we didn’t see coming, she forgives him. George tries to find Izzie to give her the scoop but Callie gets to her first. She tells Izzie that George told her everything. Now that she has the lowdown there’s gonna be a showdown. The cafeteria. High noon. BE THERE!
After getting travel tips from McSteamy, McDreamy asks Meredith to go away with him for 48 hours of sex in wine country which, we presume, is much better than 48 hours of sex in Seattle. In order to go, she must trade shifts with Alex who forces her to take Norman, the world’s oldest intern, for the day. This proves challenging when Norman makes what we call a near-fatal goof by telling the wrong woman she’s dying. The search is on to find her once she checks out...of the hospital, that is.
Bloody chainsaws, a haunted foot, a dead mom’s ashes and trick or treating for ears. We feel Dr. Alex Karev said it best when he said, “Happy Freakin’ Halloween!”
It’s October 31st at Seattle Grace. Some past ghosts and a chainsaw pumpkin-carving contest are sure to add to the Halloween fun. After Callie and Bailey warn the team to watch for the usual slew of freaks and weirdos, Callie tells Izzie to direct all of her questions to Bailey. Why? “Because she’s been sleeping with my husband,” Callie announces calmly. ‘Nuff said.
Meredith is haunted by the fact that she hasn’t put her mother to rest. So she pops mom’s ashes into a baggie and brings them to work. Hey, at least they’re out of her closet, right? Of course, when she literally runs into McDreamy they end up on the floor. During the cleanup, Meredith meets a young boy who needs an ear. She forms a plan with Sloan to do a little pro bono surgery. This includes having the kid trick or treat for ears to gain sympathy from all those who must sign off on the procedure.
A skydiver freefalls without a chute, two brides-to-be battle for their dream wedding and The Chief plans a “gentlemen’s evening” putting McDreamy and McSteamy a little on-edge. It’s just another day at Seattle Grace that should end with Izzie and George having “hot, perfect sex.” That’s Izzie’s plan, anyway.
Meredith can’t sleep and Cristina diagnoses her with abandonment issues. She advises her to stop having breakup sex with Derek. We don’t advise that at all. Breakup sex is better than no sex. Just ask George and Izzie. But all that’s about to change because Izzie is tired of waiting. She tells George that tonight’s the night.
After a long, long, long, long wait—George and Izzie finally sleep together! That’s the good news. Unfortunately, it’s also the bad news.
They say there’s nothing like great sex. And what George and Izzie do in the bedroom is nothing like great sex. George tells Meredith that Izzie’s trying too hard. Izzie then confides that George “kisses like a chicken.” Pecking, pecking, pecking! Thankfully, Meredith and McDreamy are still having great “breakup sex.” They hit a little snag during the afterglow though when the Chief walks in on them.
As McDreamy dates one coworker and flirts with another (neither of which are named Meredith), a busload of injured high school students and Dr. Bailey’s old flame turn up the heat at Seattle Grace.
Derek goes on a date with the somewhat eccentric Dr. Sydney Heron (guest star Kali Rocha) as Meredith and Mark look on in disbelief. George and Izzie continue to have sex that, according to Izzie, is “just tragic.” When word of their rocky relationship spreads, Callie doesn’t really try to hide her smile.
A violent ambulance crash sets the stage for a day filled with traumas and dramas that quickly spiral out of control for just about everyone at Seattle Grace.
Bailey’s husband is fed up because she’s never around. Being Chief Resident is a full-time job. But so is being a stay-at-home dad. Bailey invites her hubby to the hospital so they can talk it out over lunch.
Derek is getting pretty chummy with a pretty nurse named Rose. He asks about the ring she wears around her neck. It’s from an engagement that ended because she knew what she wanted but her fiancé didn’t. You can see by the look on McDreamy’s face that he knows exactly what she means.
Derek flies blind inside an open brain, Meredith tries to save a paramedic as he hangs upside-down and if Lexie moves her hand, a man will die. Everything is about to come crashing down at Seattle Grace.
We last left Lexie as she was being showered in blood by her patient Nick’s burst artery. She uses her hand to cover the wound in his neck, but if either of them moves, Nick will bleed out. Lexie manages to control the bleeding until Sloan arrives. But when the artery bursts again, the search is on to find an open OR.
Izzie has a lack of faith, Alex has a show of faith and Miranda’s faith is shaken to its core when her one-year-old baby boy is rushed to Seattle Grace.
The day begins with Derek taking Mark on a nature walk to show off the view of his future home. Afterwards, Derek stops by the house as Meredith makes breakfast for Lexie. When Derek drops news of the McDream house he’s building for both of them, Meredith drops an egg on the floor. You think that may be a sign of things to come? Lexie, meanwhile, eats the awful omelet her half-sis made even though she’s allergic to eggs.
George’s mom hits the hospital for a visit. George never told her about his split with Callie. Izzie unwittingly breaks the news of her affair with Mrs. O’Malley’s little boy as well as that little tidbit about George failing his intern exams. Mom is crushed. She wants George to move home so she can take care of him. George, however, knows it’s time he started taking care of himself. It’s nice to know that Georgie-boy is no mama’s boy. He asks Lexie to be his roommate in a new apartment. No eggs in the fridge though.
Izzie isn’t the only one spilling secrets. George overhears Derek talking about kissing Rose. He blabs about it to Meredith thinking it was common knowledge. It wasn’t. Mer tells Der she can’t trust him. Der tells Mer he knew she’d find a reason to walk away. This time it looks like the breakup is legit, so Derek asks Rose out to dinner. When she mentions she thought he wasn’t available, Derek replies, “Turns out I am.\"
Meredith, Cristina, Izzie and Alex engage in an intense medical competition where only the most resourceful resident will win the day. And a couple of brothers are attacked by a bear. Oh my!
There’s a surgical contest afoot at Seattle Grace. Points are awarded on a case-by-case basis. Everyone wants to win so no one has been home in weeks. Well, George has. He moved into a run-down, roach-infested apartment. New roomie Lexie tries to brighten up the dump by stealing assorted items from the hospital. We never realized bedpans made such lovely flower vases!
Cristina is still trying to get in good with Dr. Hahn. She’s shocked to see how Callie has become such good friends with her. Mark, on the other hand, wants to go trolling for women with his old buddy Derek after hearing he hasn’t slept with Rose yet. Derek insists he’s waiting until they are more serious.
Dr. Addison Montgomery returns to discover things are a little different at Seattle Grace and yet some things never change.
We were totally jazzed to see Kate Walsh take a break from her Private Practice to make a triumphant return to Seattle Grace. Yes, Addison is back, even though she tells everyone she’s not. Her expertise is needed for a rare prenatal surgery. An unborn baby’s heart is growing outside of his body. Addison will deliver the baby while Erica works on the heart. Alex, Mark, Bailey and the Chief also pitch in.
The baby’s surgery is risky. Alex is angered by the optimistic parents, feeling they may be unprepared. His attitude worsens when Rebecca/Ava shows up announcing she’s pregnant. Izzie examines her in the clinic. The tests results show Rebecca’s not pregnant (Ava either). You think Izzie will tell Alex? Sometimes that whole doctor-patient confidentiality thing is really annoying.
Cristina is upset when Burke wins an award, Meredith is flustered by her feelings for McDreamy and every nurse in Seattle is steamed at McSteamy.
The nurses are boycotting surgeries with Dr. Sloan, a result of his repeated sexual romps in RN world. Now everyone at Seattle Grace must submit a form listing any coworker they’ve slept with in the past, as well as anyone they’re sleeping with in the present. We’re thinking they may run out of paper.
The Chief is surprised when ex-wife, Adele, pops up as a nurse mediator. Richard wants Adele to believe he’s changed by insisting he delegates his duties now. To prove it, he ropes George into taking the made-up job of the Chief’s intern. His first assignment—get everyone to sign those dreaded “Date and Tell” forms. George performs his job admirably but is upset when he realizes the Chief is using him to get back with his wife. Richard offers to make the position legit.
Fairy tales and fantasies mark the day as Meredith and McDreamy treat a woman with a Cinderella story while Sloan dreams of a threesome with two of Seattle Grace’s top docs. And the Chief’s mentor shows up in need of a risky heart procedure that no one wants to perform.
Still feeling the aftershocks of the nurse boycott, Sloan transforms himself into a new man. Let’s just call him McSensitive. Callie doesn’t care for the new Mark. She doesn’t want to talk. She only wants sex. Erica jokes that she’s having an affair with Callie. The idea of a threesome intrigues Mark—especially when Erica kisses Callie right in front of him. The girl-on-girl smooch jolts Sloan back to his McSteamy ways and leaves Callie a bit shaken.
Meredith and Derek may lose their clinical trial at midnight and a young man encased in concrete will certainly lose his life if the team at Seattle Grace doesn’t find a way to free him. Fast!
In an attempt to cheer up a depressed Cristina, Meredith gives her the sparkle pager; for the keeper of the prettified pager gets first dibs on all surgeries. This helps Cristina get her medical mojo back. But Rose’s mojo is a no-go whenever she’s around Meredith. Must stem from the fact that Derek decides to sell the land where he planned to build the Mer-Der McDream home.
Callie and Sloan are still hot and heavy. But Sloan makes their trysts more tantalizing by talking about all the dirty things they could be doing if Erica were there too. We didn’t know they could say things that steamy on network TV.
In the two-part season finale, Meredith and Derek take another shot at the clinical trial while the others race to free a boy from a hardening block of cement. Meanwhile, Izzie helps Alex care for Rebecca and Lexie learns a secret about George\'s intern status.
